Raising Awareness of COPD
One Baton Pass at a time
In August 2022 Dr Ruth Barker and Mr Russell Winwood connected to discuss how they could raise awareness for COPD.
The Inspiring Journey of the World COPD Day Big Baton Pass: A Global Celebration of Health and Awareness!
Meet Ruth and Russell – two passionate individuals whose unique backgrounds and shared love for running have sparked a revolutionary movement in COPD awareness. Ruth, with her PhD in Clinical Research from Imperial College London and her extensive expertise in the respiratory field, and Russell, a fearless COPD patient who runs marathons around the world to champion the cause, are making waves together.
Their connection was forged through a mutual enthusiasm for running, but their collaboration soon grew into something far more impactful. Driven by their dedication to showcasing the vital role of exercise in managing COPD, Ruth and Russell faced a major hurdle: they lived on opposite sides of the globe – Ruth in the UK and Russell in Australia.
From Idea to Global Impact
Determined to bridge the distance, Ruth and Russell envisioned a groundbreaking solution: a virtual event that could transcend borders and time zones. Thus, the World COPD Day Big Baton Pass was born! This innovative event aimed to highlight the importance of exercise in COPD management through a live global broadcast. Picture this: a virtual baton being passed from one country to the next, starting in New Zealand and traveling all the way to the Americas.
Their goal was to unite patients and healthcare professionals worldwide, creating a platform that not only spreads awareness but also fosters learning and collaboration. COPD, now the third leading cause of death globally, often lacks the spotlight it deserves in mainstream media and funding arenas. Ruth and Russell were determined to change that.
Building the Big Baton Pass
With no initial funding and a dream in mind, Ruth and Russell rallied support from the respiratory community and beyond. They tackled everything from website design to broadcasting logistics, teaching themselves as they went along. The inaugural 2023 event was set to feature a mix of live and pre-recorded presentations, all accessible via an online link, allowing a global audience to participate.
As World COPD Day on November 15th, 2023, approached, excitement and nerves were at their peak. Ruth and Russell hoped for a smooth transition of the virtual baton and a glitch-free event.
A Triumph Beyond Expectations!
The Big Baton Pass event was a resounding success, surpassing all expectations! While there were a few technical hiccups, the event achieved its mission of raising awareness and celebrating the power of exercise in managing COPD. Participants around the world praised the event and eagerly anticipated its future growth.
The COPD Big Baton Pass has now earned its place on the respiratory calendar. For Ruth, Russell, and their dedicated team, the event marks a significant milestone in their quest to bring COPD into the global spotlight. The next step? To expand its reach beyond the respiratory community and continue inspiring positive change.
